Get Smart The Movie A summary
The description of the movie is – action comedy. Well, there’s a lot of action all right – it just kind of flies off the screen most times and maybe we should be grateful for that because it perks up the movie for sure. The descriptor ‘comedy’ should have been further explained because most of the humor is rather crass and a bit over the top.
This is the story – an agent called Maxwell Smart works for CONTROL and though he is a nerd he has his dreams of being a wonderful action agent someday. There is an authentic action agent all right – called Agent 99 and she’s beautiful, in your face and very, very good at what she does. Quite a contrast to our dear nerdy analyst who was once obese and who is still a food addict. The problem lies in Max’s head – while most people think he’s a bumbling fool, he thinks he is brilliant and nothing can shake this crazy belief.
Much of the movie follows a Bond movie kind of path especially in the slick visual effects and action. However, the Bond here is a female and Agent 99 is also quite domineering and aggressive. This comes through especially so in her treatment of Max who she obviously looks down upon and belittles every chance she gets. He is definitely not her kind of man, never mind that he thinks otherwise. Well, he gets the chance to play out an agent’s role for a spell simply because their rivals, KAOS wipes out a lot of the CONTROL agents and thanks to sheer need, the powers that be let Max join a mission.
Of course there’s a more to the plot before the happy ending – otherwise how on earth would it stretch through to regular movie time? So Max is suspected to be a double agent, his friends help out and he brings the enemy to justice – oh and wins the girl too. After that kind of success, how could he be anything else but a full-fledged agent? So like all good thrillers, after the chase, there is success and the chase as usual is both from an action, career point of view as well as the sexual angle. The ugly ducking has grown to a swan and got the best job, the best girl and it’s a happily ever after ending.
