Get Smart The Movie Casting
What hits you in the posters is Anne Hathaway - will she be the right person for this role? We'll just have to wait and see, won't we? But somehow, till she does prove herself, an Agent 99 role seems a bit incongruous for the Princess Diaries star. Soft, sweet, large-eyed with innocence dripping out of her every pore, one wonders how she will handle the role. Angelina Jolie in a role like this, one can imagine but Anne Hathaway - even her name is so Shakespearean-romantic - seems to be a misfit. And yet, she is the character that dominates the movie and she is the one who dominates the poster. To think of her as Agent 99 dominating and trying to subdue her male counterparts seems unlikely and more than that, seems a bit of what perhaps we as an audience do not want to see. One tends to feel a bit let down almost.
So where does Max Smart fit it? Will it be like the amount of focus there is on Steve Carell in the film poster? Face half-hidden and rather in the background or pushed into the background by the more dominating female character? Well, Steve Carell hasn't had much success in the box office with the two films preceding this so maybe the producer felt that it might just be a gamble putting a loser right in front. So the winner, here the female agent, gets all the glory while Max who gets the nerdy role is in the shadow.
Let's take a look at the other actors - some good ones here so there's hope for the film yet. There's Alan Arkin as the chief of CONTROL and there's The Rock Dwayne Johnson as Agent 23 - the pinnacle that any agent will want to aspire for. There's Dalip - The Great Khali - Singh who plays the part of Agent Rana and there are cameo appearances by Bill Murray, Patrick Warburton and Bernie Kopell. There's also a strong rumor - denied of course - that Barbara Feldon is doing a small role. The KAOS crew main ones are played by Ken Davitian and Terence Stamp. Pretty impressive casting for an action comedy. Will they pull together and make this movie a hit? Or no matter what they do will the movie anyway sink into anonymity? Guess we'll have to wait till the 20th of June to find out!
