Get Smart The Movie Spy Humor
Warner Brothers is so confident that their movie will be a hit that they already have a DVD ready called Get Smarter which will feature Max's two friends who are as bad as he is when it comes to nerdiness. They are the friends who help him when he is being accused of being a double agent and they help solve the mystery. This trend of riding on the back of big budget movies with small budget DVDs that feature some of the characters in a new story seems to be getting into vogue.
The original TV series was funny - no two ways about that. Unfortunately, the comedy in the present Get Smart veers off in a slightly different direction. Foul language and vapid jokes do not a comedy make - at least not most of the time. So if the director and scriptwriters thought they could get away with fast action shots and quick paced editing to make the jokes acceptable, they got another think coming. You need funny characters for a comedy and you need lines that are memorable funny. The old TV series had that. The new one could just be forgettable. This does not mean that the movie just has to follow the old Get Smart. But what it has to do is to be good in its genre. The quality of humor is pathetic and forced. The jokes make you yawn and the satire.well, you'll have to search really hard to find it, if at all you do!
Some reviewers have called it vomit humor and ass jokes. You will have to see the movie to figure out whether it really is so bad. Sometimes, action does take the focus off the jokes so maybe it will be all right from an overall point of view but that in no way can excuse a bad script or a corny joke. Humor is one of the hardest things to achieve in a movie - there is such a delicate balance between great wit and corny slapstick - and there's even greater pressure on the remake of a highly successful funny movie. For some in the Get Smart team to run down the original series and then not seemingly come up to scratch is sad. Far better to have acknowledged the greatness of the original and try to do one better to have a hit on one's hands.
