Get Smart The Movie The Cameos

It seems to be the trend these days to get stars to make not just walk-on appearances in a movie but to actually do a little cameo role. Well, what better way than to get some of the stars of the original movie to do small parts in this movie? Add a few more big names to the cameo list and you should think the movie has it made!

The thing is, Get Smart when filming began, seemed all set to just take the storyline of the original TV series and ditch everything else. The director, Peter Segal had in fact gone public and said that the old series was hopelessly outdated and the cold war had no relevance today whatsoever. Then why make the remake one wonders? Surely there were many other scripts in the same genre? Be that as it may, though he had to eat his words, and two from the creative team from the original series are part of the film, as far as roles are concerned, one or maybe two cameo roles will feature actors from the TV series. Bernie Kopell who played the part of Siegfried on the KAOS side will be doing one and in all probability, Barbara Feldon who played the part of 99 will be there as well, though there have been emphatic denials on this score.

There are many rather interesting actors who will be appearing in cameo roles as well. There is Patrick Washburton as Hymie the robot and Bill Murray as another agent. Quite a good star cast one must say. If only it all works together and all that negative pre-launch publicity is all blown away and we have a good film to view. We'll know in June and till then, we'll just maybe have to ignore the bad press which somehow this movie has generated and try and judge the film on its own merit.

One can't help but wonder if we are in the midst of a cameo era here. The idea of stars from an original series doing a part in a remake is such a good idea if it is well executed. It just makes people who loved the series want to watch. It might even make people who have heard of its success come and watch too. If cameos can help you do that, here's to more of them!
