Get Smart The Movie The Controversial Poster

It isn't always that a film poster gets so much flack - unfortunately it's happened with the Get Smart poster. There is Anne Hathaway portraying Agent 99, looking stunning in the poster. And where, oh where is Max, the hero of the movie? Hidden in the shadow with just half his face being visible.

If it hadn't been a remake, probably this would have been totally acceptable. There is no past to make you judge what should be shown and what shouldn't. Therein lies the great disadvantage of a remake. Especially when the original was such a huge success. A many award-winning success at that. So one looks and judges and gets annoyed that the character who appeared on TV for five years and walked into every viewer's heart is given such short shrift here in this poster.

The thing is, it is logical to assume that if this is the case in the poster, can the treatment in the film be far behind? This is no doubt what a lot of potential viewers will think, more so if they have watched and loved the old series. The characters of the old series by virtue of having been around for five years in the small screen have become larger than life and this is bound to have a spillover effect on any remake.

Then there's Anne Hathaway already with the Princess Diaries kind of stamp of innocence all over her. Will she be able to play 99? Is she star enough to carry off the role which Barbara Feldon played to perfection in the original? And yet, she is given pride of place in the poster. The weight of a role like this - one wonders if it will a bit too much for her delicate shoulders. And Steve Carell - just because he has had two films in the recent past bomb so badly in the box office - does this warrant relegating him to the background? The poster is the first indication of what the film promises and for sure, this poster does not bring with it a very good one.

The trouble with negative publicity is that once it starts, it grows in leaps and bounds. Just a simple poster and what it could imply will soon take on proportions that a film today can ill afford to be burdened with. Maybe just maybe, the film will ride through this storm in a teacup and come up smelling like roses. Like we said..maybe.
