Get Smart The Movie Where Is Mel Brooks

The law got into the act and in the process, it looks like this year's release of Get Smart, a remake of the old TV series with the same name is going to feel the heat. It had to be about the money, honey! The people in the new movie just did not want to acknowledge the contribution that the creative team of the old series had made. So Mel Brooks, Leonard Stern, and Buck Henry were kept right out of this movie. This one is pure Peter Segal and you know what? It obviously shows.

You have a formula - one that worked and worked so well that it picked up awards almighty - two Golden Globes, seven Emmys and a nomination for fourteen more Emmys. Now why would you go and decry that as a stupid old cold war movie and set about doing it yourself? Especially when you obviously think enough about it to use it to make a movie. Now that is the first thing that makes no sense. You have something ready made, being handed to you on a platter with a recipe for success and you go empty it into the trash can? Rather hard to take that in!

Then came the second boo-boo. There were petitions being signed online about this disgraceful omission. When newspapers picked up this piece of information and things started appearing in print, instead of quickly squashing the rumors and doing something positive, they let it go into court and were faced with a lawsuit. It had to be negotiated and charges were dropped when Mel Brooks and Buck Henry were signed on by Warner Brothers as creative consultants. However, sad to say, most of the shooting had already been done so that left them with wonderful consultants whose inputs they just could not use because it was too late. Which is why you will not see any influence or Brooks or Henry in this new remake. The sad part is that the old creative team was left out because of monetary considerations. Wouldn't it be a tragedy if the film bombed in the box office when it could just have made it to being a winner?

What was also quite sad was the way the director ignored the creative team earlier and then started shouting it out from the rooftops after they were forced to sign them on. However, from what has been seen so far, the trailer, the little snippets of information, the sneak previews, it is quite obvious that this movie does not have anything that smacks of the touch of this great creative team. They raised the bar when it came to spy comedy - let's hope the bar doesn't fall off its perch with this remake.
